I just wanted to say that I've been coming across your comments as I browse blogs and I really enjoy them! (Particularly at Jezebel and the liberal blogs that were covering the FBI's giving Viagra to tribal warlords in Afghanistan.)

Are these things mutually exclusive? You could seek 'net fame (hint: blog about sexcapades! empowerful!) AND go to grad school. Like me, but without the sexcapades. ...so maybe that's a bad idea.

Other suggestions: become a couturier (-euse) for Liberty and her ilk, start a weekly salon for the devilishly clever but fashionably challenged, write a play every 24 hours, or read all of Proust.

Here. Here. Or is it Hear. Hear.
I come from a similar background, if I've reacted in a bit different way. Luckily, my closest friends tend to be those of a similar background, so I still don't belong with the intellectual crowd. Unfortunately, I'm almost as big a snob as those you describe, at least the biggest snob among my friends. It's my biggest demon, and I'm not really sure I've defeated it.
Basically, I'm a snob, yet also a reverse snob. I'm a fish out of water in every pond in which I swim. Whether I show it or not, at the very least I do know more than most about the individuality which exists in the social classes.
So, no real point in the comment, but that's a great post, and I'm glad you wrote it, because I enjoyed reading it.

I never got around to reading Wallace's stuff while he was alive. Now I've got A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again in my stack of books to read. Thank you for your thoughts on this writer.

PS: I'm ucelluccia on Jezebel. Not a stalker, I promise.

@John aspex

I'm not sure I buy this. Isn't Hamlet's preoccupation with thinking and consideration the reason that the play goes into Act Five? If he'd killed his stepfather when he'd had the chance, instead of thinking about it for five acts, he wouldn't have a dead mother, lover, or cousin.

There's a position in Zen thought that argues that what thinking does is exactly the opposite of making the world what it is--the world is always what it is. Thinking creates illusions that divorce us from that reality.

I always read that Hamlet quote as being a Zen expression--the world is, only according to its nature. The ideas of "good" and "bad" are artificial constructions that divorce consciousness from reality.
